The launch math

one number we plan every launch around

Why not two weeks?

trade editors plan ahead

Feature slots on the energy and cleantech trades fill weeks out, and a national climate desk wants time to ring an outside scientist before writing a word about your chemistry. Rush it and you get a brief, not a story.

42

days, kickoff call to embargo lift. it’s the runway every Fern & Foghorn launch campaign runs on.
Why not a quarter?

climate news ages fast

A pilot result, a first offtake, an interconnection win — give it ninety days of prep and your “news” is something the reporter already scrolled past on LinkedIn. Six weeks keeps it fresh and still lets us do it right.

What founders hire us for

the work, with the price on the tin

Climate founders tend to be brilliant at the physics and allergic to the pitch. Fair — that’s our half. We translate MWh, tCO₂e and TRL-speak into a sentence a reporter can file on deadline, then put it in front of the specific journalists who cover your corner of the transition. Not a blast list. Not a wire release into the void. A short, named list and a story worth their morning.

  1. the press kit

Everything a journalist needs to write about you without emailing back for basics — built once, used for every pitch after.

    • Embargo-ready release, written in reporter English
    • Founder bios in three lengths, from one line to one page
    • A fact sheet where every number has a source attached
    • The skeptic’s Q&A: the hard questions, answered first

  2. the outreach sprint

Four weeks, one sharp angle, a reporter list built by hand for your beat. For the months between big moments when you still want to be in the conversation.

    • Angle workshop with your founders in week one
    • Pitches written one reporter at a time — no mail-merge
    • Reactive commentary when your sector makes news
    • Friday debrief: who bit, who passed, what we heard

  3. the launch campaign

The full 42-day runway for a product, a round or a first deployment: kit, embargoed briefings, launch-morning desk and a week of follow-through.

    • The full press kit, included
    • Embargoed briefing schedule with trade and national desks
    • Founder prep before every interview
    • Launch-day desk from 5:30 a.m., plus a coverage report

How a launch moves

read it like a tide table

Gloucester runs on tide charts. So does a good launch: every move is timed against one fixed point — the minute your embargo lifts.

t–42 → t–21

kickoff, then the kit

A 90-minute kickoff call, then three weeks building the kit. We interview the founders, pressure-test every figure with your engineers, and draft the release while the story is still taking shape — not at midnight before the lift.

EMBARGOED

t–21 → t–1

the quiet pitching

Embargoed briefings go out to a short, named list on your beat — trade titles first, national climate desks after. Before every call your founder gets a one-page brief on the reporter: what they’ve filed lately, what they always ask, what makes them roll their eyes.

t–21 t–7 t–0

t–0 → t+7

lift, then follow through

The embargo lifts at 6:00 a.m. Eastern; we’re on the desk from 5:30. Reporter follow-ups get answered inside the hour, any number printed wrong gets corrected the same morning, and the week after goes to turning first coverage into second-wave stories.

your embargo date is the only thing we need to start counting backwards.

give us the date

From the desk on Washington Street, Gloucester

“Out on the breakwater, the foghorn never gets louder when the weather thickens. It sounds on schedule — and the boats find the harbor.”

The line pinned over our desk · 984 Washington St, Gloucester, MA

That’s the whole method: the right reporter, the right interval, no shouting. We work weekdays 8am–4:30pm from Gloucester, and founders passing through Cape Ann are welcome to knock.

Before you sign anything

what founders ask us on the first call

can you guarantee coverage?

No — and be wary of anyone who does. Journalists decide what runs. What we commit to is the work itself: the kit, the list, the pitches, the briefings and the follow-through, done on the runway we agreed at kickoff.

we’re pre-seed. is this too early?

If you have something genuinely new to say — a pilot result, a first paying customer, a novel material — no. If the news is “we exist,” we’ll say so on the call and suggest a sprint once you’ve got a milestone worth a headline.

sprint or launch — which one do we need?

A launch is for one big moment with a date on it: a product, a round, a first deployment. A sprint keeps you in the conversation between those moments. A common rhythm is one launch, then a sprint or two while the next milestone cooks.

who actually writes the pitches?

Whoever sat in your kickoff call writes every pitch that carries your name. The context about your tech never gets diluted in a hand-off, and reporters hear one consistent voice from start to lift.

how does billing work?

Launches are invoiced half at kickoff, half at embargo lift. Sprints are invoiced on the first of each month and you can stop after any one of them. We take ACH, Visa, Mastercard and Amex.

Start the countdown

send us your ship date. we’ll count backwards.

bring these to the first call

  1. Your one-sentence why-now: why this matters this year, not someday.
  2. The number you’re proudest of — and exactly where it came from.
  3. Your ship, raise or deployment date, even if it’s still in pencil.
  4. The competitor you’re tired of seeing quoted instead of you.
  5. A founder photo that isn’t a cropped conference-lanyard shot.
